Education and academic career


Mustafa Baba Babanli was born on February 21, 1968, in a family of teachers in Saatli. Upon graduation from Baku secondary school of Physics and Mathematics No. 1 in 1983, he got admitted to Kyiv Polytechnic Institute and began his studies in Physics of metals at the Faculty of Engineering and Physics. After receiving an honours degree from Physics of metals of the Faculty of Engineering and Physics of the National Technical University of Ukraine in 1989, he started his career as an engineer-technologist at “Kristal” Special Design Office under Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences. 


Babanli received his postgraduate education at the Institute of Metal Physics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in 1990-1992. Defending his Ph.D. thesis “Phase transformations in rapidly cooled TiNiCu alloys” in Physics of solids ahead of time, he became a Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences in 1993.


As of 1996, he has been working at the Department of Metallurgy and Metal Science of Azerbaijan Technical University. He fulfilled the positions of assistant (1996-2001), associate professor (2001-2010), professor (2010-2015). From 2010 to 2015, he was a Vice-Rector for International Relations at Azerbaijan Technical University.


On February 27, 2008, Mustafa Babanli defended his doctoral thesis for technical sciences at Azerbaijan Technical University and received an academic degree of Doctor of Technical Sciences in Materials Science. He is a member of the Dissertation Council D-02.171 at Azerbaijan Technical University and the Methodical Coordinating Council under the Ministry of Education.

Pursuant to the decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated September 3, 2015, he was appointed Rector of Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University. He is a member of the International Association of University Presidents.

204 scientific and scientific-methodological works of Professor M. Babanli has so far been published. He is also the author of 124 scientific and scientific-methodological works, 8 patents, 28 materials for international and republican scientific-technical conferences, 4 textbooks, 4 manuals, 6 monographs and 3 syllabi. As of 1994, he has been closely cooperating with the Institute of Metal Physics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (Kyiv, Ukraine), The City of Paris Industrial Physics and Chemistry Higher Educational Institution (Paris, France), the National Center for Scientific Research (Vitry-sur-Seine, France), the University of the Balearic Islands (Palma de Mallorca, Spain), Freiberg Mining Academy, University of Technology (Freiberg, Germany).
