In light of Azerbaijan's declaration of 2024 as the "Green World Solidarity Year" and hosting the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) in the capital city, a Working Group has been established at the Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University (ASOIU). The establishment of the Working Group was deliberated during ASOIU's Academic Board and was supported by the Board members. Thus, at ASOIU, a Working Group related to COP29 has been formed, marking the initiation of the "Green University" project.
The transition to a "green" economy and becoming a "green" energy provider have been announced as priorities of the economic policy of the Republic of Azerbaijan, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 35% by 2030 compared to the 1990s, and further by 40% by 2050. Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University is an institution of higher education that educates engineering professionals in the fields of oil, gas, chemistry, and energy, possessing rich scientific potential in these areas. As a leading institute of higher education that cooperates with the University of Warwick in the UK on renewable energy sources and implements the latest international programs, such as the "Water Resources Management" specialization at the Azerbaijani-French University, ASOIU sees it as its moral duty to contribute to progress in the country in the framework of the "Green World Solidarity Year" and the COP29 Summit.
For this purpose, ASOIU has developed and prepared a 2024 action plan within the framework of the "Green University" project. The action plan includes a variety of activities, including organizing a scientific conference under the COP29 branding, arranging a hackathon aimed at tackling the issue of reducing carbon emissions, establishing the "Artificial Intelligence Laboratory for a Green World," opening the "AzII Park," as well as addressing issues such as organizing international summer schools on "Climate Change and the Economy" and organizing eco-tours for students.
