Student Achievements in Sustainability



    At the heart of our university’s sustainability mission lies a vibrant community of students who are actively driving innovative solutions for a greener future. Their achievements exemplify the integration of academic excellence, entrepreneurial thinking, and environmental responsibility.

    Our students have demonstrated exceptional initiative in launching sustainability-focused startups that address pressing environmental challenges. These ventures not only embody the spirit of social entrepreneurship but also reflect a deep commitment to implementing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to climate action, responsible consumption, and clean energy.

    Hackathons organized at the university have emerged as dynamic platforms for developing real-world, tech-driven environmental solutions. These events bring together students from diverse disciplines to ideate, prototype, and pitch sustainable innovations in a competitive yet collaborative environment.

STARTUPS AND INNOVATION

  • International Startup Triumph (ABC Project)

    The ABC team from ASOIU developed a head-controlled wheelchair system for ALS patients and won 1st place in the “Finding Innovative and Creative Solutions” startup contest. The ABC startup is a wheelchair system controlled by head movements designed for people with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis). Additionally, it includes a computer-controlled by head movements to facilitate communication for individuals with disabilities.

    The ABC team went on to represent Azerbaijan at the Grand Finale in Islamabad, Pakistan, where they clinched first place among 800 teams from 30+ universities - a remarkable international victory improving accessibility for people with disabilities.

  • Green FinTech Innovation

    ASOIU students secured 2nd place (with a ₼3000 prize) at the “Green Fintech Startup Challenge” organized by ABB Innovation. Their startup Ecomart is an AI-driven ERP solution that helps food producers and retailers minimize waste by analyzing sales data to optimize inventory.

    This achievement highlights our students’ entrepreneurial spirit in using technology for sustainable business practices.

    GardenX Startup

    GardenX is a smart pot combined with electronic and software solutions. The electronic device placed inside and the sensors placed in the soil ensure the autonomous watering of the plant according to the moisture in the pot, and send the necessary information about the plant to the owner via a mobile application.

    HealWith Startup

    HealWith is a mobile application powered by artificial intelligence designed to diagnose plant diseases. The user can capture a clear image of their plant using the app, which then analyzes the photo using advanced AI algorithms. The application compares the image to an extensive database of plant diseases, identifying the specific condition affecting the plant. Once the disease is recognized, the app provides detailed information about the diagnosis, along with suggested treatment methods and care recommendations to help the plant recover. This solution aims to make plant care more accessible and efficient, offering immediate, reliable guidance for plant owners.

    Velorator Startup

    The Velorator is an innovative bicycle accessory that integrates a battery system with energy-harvesting technology. As you pedal, the device generates electrical energy through a dynamo mechanism that is powered by the motion of the bike's wheels. This energy is stored in a built-in battery within the Velorator. The device is designed to be compact and seamlessly attaches to your bike, capturing the kinetic energy produced during your ride.

    Vecta Startup

    Vecta is an advanced Internet of Things (IoT) device designed to analyze and determine the composition of soil. This smart device integrates a variety of sensors that assess critical soil parameters, including moisture levels, pH, temperature, and nutrient content, such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Vecta's sensors are capable of collecting real-time data from the soil, providing detailed insights into its overall health and fertility.

HACKATHONS AND TECH COMPETITIONS

  • Technofest 2024

    Our ASOIU team “Spark” earned 1st place in the T3 AI Hackathon at Teknofest 2024 in Adana, Turkey. Competing among over 774,000 applicants (1,270 finalist teams from 100 countries), they built an AI solution in the “Accessible Life” challenge to assist individuals with attention disorders, dyslexia, and color blindness – a win that put our students on an international stage for tech-driven inclusivity.

  • “Secure Tomorrow” Eco Hackathon

    At a university-wide hackathon on ecological awareness, ASOIU SABAH Groups students took the top prizes. Team Spark (ASOIU) won 1st place, with teams “THETA” and “FUTURIST” also securing 2nd and 3rd. This Secure Tomorrow hackathon victory, awarded during the SABAH 10th Anniversary Forum, reflects our students’ commitment to sustainability-focused innovation.

    Insurance Tech Hackathon Success

    Two ASOIU teams excelled in a hackathon co-organized by PASHA Insurance and Baku Higher Oil School, taking 2nd and 3rd place. One project streamlined post-accident insurance claims using computer vision (Detectron2), while team “Eclipse” developed a driver-behavior analytics app for safer driving and better insurance services. These projects showcase our students applying AI to improve industry services.

    USG APEX Hackathon Sweep

    ASOIU students clinched both 1st and 2nd places at the USG APEX Hackathon (organized by ADA University, PASHA Life, and AzInTelecom). Teams of ASOIU - “Enigma” won the ₼2500 first prize, and team “Optimum” earned the ₼1500 second prize, outperforming 95 teams nationwide. Their solutions leveraged cutting-edge technologies to tackle challenges in the life insurance sector, demonstrating our students’ ability to innovate in fintech and insuretech.

  • Green Hackathon Grand Prize

    At a Green Hackathon supporting the SABAH Incubation program and UN Sustainable Development Goals, our students won the ₼5000 grand prize. Team “Ecoffin by Codage” – including ASOIU students Elgun Hasanov and Emin Khalifayev – proposed “Ecoffin,” an eco-friendly rocket fuel to cut carbon emissions from launches. With ~300 tons CO₂ emitted per launch globally, their solution aims to make space exploration more sustainable, an innovation recognized for its impact on future green tech.

    AI Hackathon Champions

    ASOIU’s team “Codage” (Elgun Hasanov, Fatulla Bashirov, Ismayil Huseynov, Turan Ahmadov) took 1st place at the Google AI Hackathon sponsored by Bakcell, earning a ₼3000 award. They built a fraud detection system for the financial sector, using deep learning to flag fraudulent transactions and even integrating a custom Large Language Model as an anti-fraud assistant. This win highlights our students’ prowess in artificial intelligence and machine learning for real-world problems.

    Techcell Hackathon Winners

    In the Azercell-ASOIU “Techcell” hackathon, our ASOIU team “Night Ops” won 1st place (₼3500), ahead of 96 teams from 15 universities. The April 2024 competition challenged students in IT, cybersecurity, and mobile networks, bridging academic knowledge with industry needs. Our students’ victory (with Baku Higher Oil School and ASOIU teams taking 2nd and 3rd) demonstrates leadership in tech innovation, supported by mentorship from Azercell and ASOIU.

    GreenTech ClimAccelerator Win

    ASOIU students Elgun Hasanov and Emin Khalifayev (team Codage) secured 1st place in GreenTech ClimAccelerator Azerbaijan 2024 (COP29 framework). Their project Ecoffin (patent-pending sustainable paraffin) reduces CO₂ emissions by 27%, yielding two eco-innovations: Ecoffin Rocket Fuel for greener hybrid rocket engines, and Ecoffin AgroProtect for eco-friendly crop pest control. This achievement earned them the honor of representing Azerbaijan internationally in the UAE, showcasing how our students turn climate solutions into global impact.

    Green Chemistry Hackathon

    ASOIU hosted a Green Chemistry Hackathon in January 2025 to develop sustainable solutions for real-world environmental problems. Teams from various universities collaborated over two days; in the end, ASOIU student team “Algenix” won 1st place, and another ASOIU team “Slay” took 3rd, with a State Customs Committee team in 2nd. This event, supported by ASOIU’s Entrepreneurship Center, provided hands-on experience with mentorship and demonstrated our students’ capacity to drive chemical engineering innovations for a greener future.

    Scholarships for Excellence

    Our students have earned numerous competitive scholarships. Four ASOIU students won the Azercell Student Scholarship Program (each receiving a monthly ₼300 stipend) for their academic excellence, and two ASOIU students were named winners of AzerGold’s 4th Scholarship Program for mining and geology studenS. Additionally, three ASOIU Computer Science majors earned PASHA Holding’s prestigious “Əlaçı” Scholarship for 2024–2025 – selected from over 3,000 applicants – which provides a stipend, mentorship, and professional training to foster their development.

    International Energy Scholarship

    Nine ASOIU students have been awarded the TotalEnergies E&P International Scholarship Program, a highly prestigious global scholarship. This recognition, bestowed by the TotalEnergies Group, supports our students’ further studies abroad and professional growth, identifying them as high-potential talents in the fields of energy and engineering.

    Empowering Women in STEM

    Seven talented ASOIU women students won the “Demir Month” Scholarship (by AGA Group) dedicated to supporting young women in STEM, finance, and medicine. The program provides each winner with a monthly ₼250–300 stipend and is designed to cultivate “iron women” as future leaders. Furthermore, ASOIU Chemical Engineering student.

    Furthermore, ASOIU Chemical Engineering student Nurlana Humbatova was selected for the prestigious Humay’s “Girls’ Advancement in STEM” scholarship, a joint Azercell and Huma Quşu Fund initiative supporting women from low-income families. Nurlana was one of 10 winners (out of 113 applicants), each receiving ₼2,500 to advance their education – a testament to her potential and perseverance in science.

    Research Fellowships Abroad

    ASOIU student Orkhan Abdullayev earned a highly competitive summer research fellowship at the Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia (ICIQ) in Spain. From July to August, he will conduct cutting-edge chemoinformatics research at this world-class chemistry center. In addition, Orkhan was selected to attend the 2024 Youth Peace Camp in Strasbourg (Council of Europe) – an honor that brings together young leaders across Europe. His achievements exemplify the academic excellence and global citizenship of our students.

    Global Research Internship

    Zaur Budagov, a ASOIU Chemical Engineering student, was accepted into an undergraduate research program at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Indiana, USA. Backed by ASOIU’s Career Center, Zaur’s selection to this prestigious program comes with a weekly $500 stipend and housing, allowing him to immerse in advanced engineering research at America’s top-ranked undergraduate engineering college. This opportunity is a significant milestone in his academic career and reflects our support for students pursuing international R&D experiences.

    Transatlantic Fellowship

    Amirali Eyvazli (ASOIU, Chemical Engineering) was chosen for the Benjamin Franklin Transatlantic Fellowship – the only student from Azerbaijan to be selected in his year. This U.S. State Department program unites young leaders from Europe and America for intensive training in democratic leadership, conflict resolution, cross-cultural understanding, and civic engagement. Amirali’s participation in this elite fellowship highlights our students’ roles as global ambassadors of youth leadership and shared values.

    International Representation in Sustainability

    Our students actively represent Azerbaijan in global sustainability and innovation forums. A team of ASOIU students joined the national delegation at the 75th International Astronautical Congress in Milan (Oct 2024), presenting research on topics like carbon management in microgravity and space life sciences aligned with the theme “Space Responsibility for Sustainability.” They engaged with 11,000+ participants from 120 countries, showcasing our university’s contributions to sustainable space research.

    Future Sustainability Leaders

    ASOIU student Novruz Juvarlinski was selected for Masdar’s Future Sustainability Leaders program at Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2025. Novruz joined promising young leaders worldwide in high-level discussions on clean energy and climate action, proudly highlighting our commitment to developing future sustainability champions on the global stage.

    Tech Competitions on the World Stage

    Our students have demonstrated outstanding talent in international tech competitions. Two ASOIU students (David Aliyev and Yusif Salahli) won 3rd place in the Mini Sumo robot combat category at Robochallenge 2024 in Romania, extending their streak after winning national Robochallenge contests in 2022 and 2023. In competitive programming, an ASOIU team earned Honorable Mention at the ICPC South Caucasus Regional Championship (49th ICPC) in Tbilisi, and individual coders Farid Gurbanov and Narmin Mammadova also received Honorable Mentions – highlighting our students’ coding prowess.

    Huawei ICT Competition

    Three ASOIU students (Anar Eyvazzada, Tamerlan Imanov, Javid Maharramli) advanced from local rounds to secure 3rd place in the Middle East & Central Asia Huawei ICT Competition finals, excelling in networking, cloud, and computing challenges. These achievements demonstrate how our students compete and win among the world’s best in engineering and IT.

    Pan-European Academic Excellence

    ASOIU Oil & Gas Engineering student Sara Rustamova emerged as the winner of the Autumn Digital EU4Energy Week quiz for Eastern Partnership universities. By demonstrating exceptional knowledge of clean energy and sustainability, she earned an invitation to a high-level EU4Energy event – an accomplishment that also underscores the impact of women in the energy sector.

    Youth of the Year

    ASOIU student Oruj Bayramov was honored as one of Azerbaijan’s “Youth of the Year” by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, recognizing his outstanding contributions at the Youth Capital 2025 ceremony. We congratulate these students for exemplifying academic brilliance and civic leadership.

    EU “Green Future” Competition Winners

    The “Times New Roman” team – consisting of ASOIU students Samir Jumshudzade, Emin Khalifayev, Seyyara Hasanova, and Turan Ahmadov – won 1st place in the EU-funded “Green Future” innovation competition in Baku. Competing among 128 teams (512 participants) in the final round, they impressed the jury with a sustainable business solution developed as part of the EU’s “For Our Planet” campaign. Their victory, celebrated by the EU Delegation to Azerbaijan, highlights how our students are driving environmental innovation and entrepreneurship on an international platform.

    Global Coding Challenge Winner

    ASOIU student Hakim Aliyev was named one of the worldwide winners of Apple’s Swift Student Challenge 2025. Competing against thousands of young developers globally, Hakim created an educational game app called “Cipher Master” that teaches classic ciphers (Caesar, Atbash, Vigenère, Morse) through an engaging storyline. His project’s creativity and technical excellence earned him a coveted spot among Apple’s 350 winners, along with an official Apple certificate, developer program membership, and an invitation to Apple Park. Hakim’s success showcases the extraordinary talent of our students in software development and their ability to shine on the world stage.

SPORTS AND LEADERSHIP

    World Champion in Karate

    Our student-athlete Nijat Kerimli, a first-year Economics student, became a World Champion in Shotokan Karate. He triumphed at the 14th World Shotokan Karate Championships (Youth category, 75 kg) held in Albena, Bulgaria in April 2024, winning gold in both kata and kumite. Nijat’s outstanding performance, raising Azerbaijan’s flag on the podium, exemplifies the discipline and excellence our students bring to both academics and athletics.

    European Paralympic Champion

    Vali Israfilov, an ASOIU master’s student in Power Engineering and a TOKYO2020 Paralympic champion, achieved double European champion status in 2024. He won the gold medal in the 100m freestyle at the European Para Swimming Championships in Madeira, Portugal, securing his second European title. Vali is also a two-time world champion in para-swimming, and his continued success on the international stage reflects the perseverance and high aspirations of our students. We are proud of Vali for inspiring the community with his athletic excellence and determination.


Each of these achievements – across startups, hackathons, academia, and sports – highlights the culture of sustainability, innovation, and excellence fostered at our university. Our students not only excel in competitions and programs but also contribute meaningfully to solving real-world problems, from green technology and AI solutions to scientific research and athletic prowess.
