The international analytics agency “Quacquarelli Symonds” (QS), active in the field of education, has today released its annual subject rankings for the world’s best universities — the QS World University Rankings by Subject — in two fields: “Engineering – Petroleum” and “Education and Teaching.”
These rankings provide an independent analysis comparing over 16,400 educational programs at 1,500 universities in 95 countries and regions. The analysis spans 55 subjects and 5 broad subject categories.
For the first time, Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University (ASOIU) has been included in the newly updated subject ranking for "Engineering – Petroleum." In this revised list, ASOIU ranks within the 101-150 range.
In other words, ASOIU is now among the top 150 universities globally with academic programs in "Engineering – Petroleum."
This achievement was driven by the university’s high performance in the "Employer Reputation" indicator, reflecting the strong employability prospects for ASOIU students and graduates due to their exceptional preparation.
Thus, the number of Azerbaijani universities included in the QS World University Rankings by Subject has now reached three, with Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University joining Azerbaijan University of Languages and Azerbaijan State University of Economics (UNEC) on the list.
Sergey Khristolyubov, QS's Regional Director, noted: "The presence of Azerbaijani universities across all levels of our rankings is expanding, and ASOIU’s high position in the 'Engineering – Petroleum' subject ranking confirms this. Last year, this university made its debut in our global rankings, and this year, it has shown a significant improvement in our flagship institutional ranking and in the regional ranking of Europe's top universities."
### Methodology
In developing the subject rankings for the world’s best universities, QS utilizes five main indicators: Academic Reputation, Employer Reputation, Citations per Paper, the H-index, and the International Research Collaboration Index. The weight of each indicator depends on the specific research and application dynamics of each subject area. For example, scientific research metrics, calculated based on data from Elsevier's Scopus platform, hold particular importance for medical programs, while practical skill acquisition is more relevant for fields such as the performing arts.
