On February 12 Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University (ASOIU) held the “Young Chemists Creativity Contest” among 7-8 graders of Baku secondary schools.
The opening ceremony of the contest co-organized with the Ministry of Education was attended by ASOIU Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs, Associate Professor Gasim Mammadov, Dean of the Faculty of Chemical Technology, Associate Professor Fattah Hashimov, Head of the Department of Chemistry and Technology of Inorganic Substances, Associate Professor Yunis Gahramanli, Head of the Sector “Organization of extracurricular activities” at the Ministry of Education Ayla Hasanova and school chemistry teachers.
Opening the event, ASOIU Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs, Associate Professor G. Mammadov expressed satisfaction with welcoming the schoolchildren at the university. He briefly informed the pupils about the university and transparent environment, invited the young people passionate about chemistry to study at ASOIU and extended his wishes of success to the participants.
Head of the Sector “Organization of extracurricular activities” at the Ministry of Education A. Hasanova stressed that involving pupils in science serves to increase their motivation in training and is an important aspect to contribute to further decisions related to their career prospects.
The contest then kicked off. A total of 17 teams being 3 people in each took part in the competition. The teams had to complete 30 tasks comprising 25 test assignments and 5 open-ended questions within 90 minutes. Then, the answers were assessed by a jury of two ASOIU teachers and one external teacher, and the winning teams were determined. Three people took the first place, while the second and third places were shared by two teams with 12 people overall. Five pupils were awarded stimulating prizes.
At the end, participants had an introductory tour to chemical laboratories of ASOIU.
