ASOIU holds an event dedicated to the tragedy of January 20

On January 19 the Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University (ASOIU) held an event to commemorate January 20 martyrs.
The event began with observing a moment of silence to remember the victims of the tragedy. Rector of ASOIU, professor Mustafa Babanli spoke about the horrible event, which took place in Baku on the night of January 19 to 20, 1990, the struggle of the people for national freedom and territorial integrity. Speaking about the political situation of that period and the struggle of the people for freedom, Mustafa Babanli underlined that with the tragedy of January 20 the Azerbaijani people also demonstrated its militancy, resilience and dignity. Rector M. Babanli noted that, despite the restriction of Soviet regime, great leader Heydar Aliyev on January 21, 1990, endangering his life came to the permanent representation of Azerbaijan in Moscow with his family members and accused the organizers of the bloody tragedy in front of the world community.
 
Providing information to event participants about the socio-political processes at that time, professor Jamal Mustafayev, head of the Social Studies department noted that the names of our martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the independence of our country on 20 January are perpetuated in the history of Azerbaijan and the memory of our people.
 
Yasar Ahmadov, associate professor of the department of Social Sciences, as a live witness of January 20 tragedy shared his memories about the events, stressed that our martyrs did not sacrifice their lives for nothing and the foundation of our independence was laid at that time.
