SDGs at ASOIU

Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University (ASOIU) actively supports Sustainable Development Goal 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities, which seeks to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. As one of Azerbaijan’s oldest and most influential technical universities, located in the heart of Baku, ASOIU plays a vital role in shaping the sustainable urban future of the country through education, research, community engagement, and innovation in urban infrastructure and energy systems.

ASOIU’s contribution to SDG 11 begins with its commitment to sustainable urban development and smart infrastructure planning. The university integrates sustainability principles into engineering, architecture, and urban technology programs, equipping students with the knowledge to design and manage environmentally responsible urban systems. Research activities focus on green construction materials, energy-efficient buildings, waste management systems, and intelligent transport solutions, aligning academic outputs with national urban development goals and the broader UN 2030 Agenda.

ASOIU also engages with the local and national community through collaborative projects and awareness campaigns. The Student Innovation Lab for SDGs, Urban Green Projects, and partnerships with Baku City Municipality, the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, and industry stakeholders help promote sustainable urban practices such as renewable energy integration, public transportation research, and circular economy models. Through these partnerships, ASOIU contributes practical solutions to the real challenges facing urban environments in Azerbaijan.

In preserving cultural and industrial heritage, ASOIU undertakes activities that promote heritage conservation, historical building restoration, and digital archiving of Azerbaijan’s industrial legacy. These initiatives strengthen the connection between the university, the city of Baku, and the national identity, ensuring that modernization coexists with cultural preservation.

Through a combination of education, innovation, community engagement, and infrastructure development, ASOIU demonstrates its strong alignment with SDG 11. The university continues to build a resilient, inclusive, and environmentally conscious academic environment — one that not only serves its students and staff but also contributes to making Azerbaijan’s cities more sustainable, liveable, and future-ready.
