Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University (ASOIU) actively advances Sustainable Development Goal 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production, which aims to ensure sustainable patterns of production and consumption. As a leading technical and energy-focused institution, ASOIU recognizes its responsibility to promote efficient resource use, waste reduction, and sustainability awareness across its campus operations and academic and research activities.
ASOIU’s approach to SDG 12 is guided by the principles of efficiency, innovation, and education for sustainability. The university integrates sustainable production concepts into its curricula in engineering, chemistry, and environmental sciences, ensuring that students understand the lifecycle of resources and the importance of minimizing environmental impact. Courses and research projects emphasize energy efficiency, green manufacturing, waste valorisation, and circular economy models, empowering graduates to drive sustainable industrial transformation across Azerbaijan and beyond.
The university’s Green Campus Initiative reflects its internal commitment to responsible resource management. Programs such as Waste 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), Plastic-Free Campus Week, Bring Your Own Cup Campaign, and Paperless Office Transition have significantly improved waste management practices and reduced single-use materials. These efforts are complemented by digitalization measures — such as online learning systems and electronic documentation — which minimize paper use and promote sustainable administrative practices.
In partnership with the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, SOCAR, and local municipalities, ASOIU implements research and awareness projects addressing industrial waste reduction, pollution control, and renewable energy solutions. The university’s laboratories and innovation centres conduct applied studies on sustainable materials, clean technologies, and eco-friendly industrial processes, reinforcing the link between research and environmental stewardship.
ASOIU also engages students and staff through sustainability campaigns and community outreach under the SDG Learncast program. These activities encourage behavioural change and collective responsibility for resource efficiency and responsible consumption in daily life. Furthermore, the university ensures proper waste segregation, battery collection points, and controlled disposal of laboratory chemicals, maintaining high standards of environmental safety.
By promoting responsible consumption and production across teaching, research, operations, and community engagement, ASOIU helps build a culture of sustainability. The university’s holistic approach — combining technological innovation, institutional leadership, and societal impact — positions ASOIU as a national model for sustainable resource management and industrial responsibility.
Through its ongoing efforts, ASOIU not only reduces its ecological footprint but also educates the next generation of engineers, innovators, and policymakers to design systems that protect the environment while sustaining economic growth — fully embodying the spirit and objectives of SDG 12.
