The Powerdent team, composed of UFAZ faculty and a student, including the invited professor in UFAZ’s Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DSAI) master’s program, Karim Tout, UFAZ’s DSAI master’s program coordinator, Samer El Zant, a master’s student in UFAZ’s DSAI program and a bachelor’s graduate from ASOIU, Emil Aliyev, along with Hanine Zaidan (dentist), has secured 1st place in the prestigious D-IA-GNO-DENT challenge in France.
The D-IA-GNO-DENT challenge, organized by the Hôpitaux universitaires de Strasbourg, the Center of Reference for Rare Oral and Dental Diseases, and the Institute of Genetics and Molecular and Cellular Biology, tasked participants with developing an AI-driven solution to detect genetic enamel alterations in dental and oral diseases.
Samer El Zant shared his impressions: “Our team’s hard work and dedication have paid off, and we are honored to have been recognized for our efforts. This victory is a testament to the exceptional skills, expertise, and collaborative spirit of each team member. It also highlights how UFAZ is able to compete and win such high-level, complex healthcare challenges.”
“I was invited by Prof. Samer El Zant. In this challenge, we had to create an artificial intelligence model to diagnose some very difficult conditions in dentistry. The conditions that we had to diagnose were quite difficult for the doctors to see and predict because they were similar to each other, and the model that we proposed was working on a step-by-step basis - we had to predict not one class but many classes, so it was a multi-classification problem for us. Everyone developed some part of the model. We performed exploratory data analysis, developed a model, and tested different architectures on matrices. It was a very fun experience overall, and I learned a lot from professors and their expertise”, shared with us, Emil.
The winning team will receive a reward of 20000 euros.
