On September 12, the forum titled "Prioritising Climate Action on the Global Higher Education Agenda" was held, co-organized by the Ministry of Science and Education and the global higher education data company Times Higher Education (THE), with the cooperation of Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University (ASOIU) and Sumgayit State University (SSU).
Following the opening ceremony, the forum, which included participants from numerous countries, continued with panel discussions. Topics discussed in the panels included: "What is the role of interdisciplinary research in building climate resilience?", "Why is the current climate action agenda failing all of us?", "Green skills: What do labour markets need and how can higher education systems help?", and "How can universities bolster the uptake of green skills and jobs?". Speakers such as Nigar Arpadarai, UN climate change high-level champion for COP29, Adam Jagiello Rusilovski, Academic Director at Innocamp Poland, Katie Normington, Vice-chancellor and CEO of De Montfort University, Kristin Özden, Global Director for Climate Education at Cambridge University Press Assessment, and Julia Seixas, Vice-Rector of Nova University Lisbon, discussed “ Why SDG 13 is fundamental to the success of the remaining goals?”.
The session on “Country case study: Challenges and opportunities for climate awareness in post-oil countries” featured speakers such as Vazeh Asgarov, Acting Rector of Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University, Ulkar Sattarova, Director of the State Agency for Science and Higher Education, Bakhtiyar Aslanbayli, Vice President for External Affairs and Communications in the Caspian Region at bp, Fariz Ismayilzadeh, Vice-Rector of ADA University, and Samir Mammadov, Country Representative for the UN Global Compact.
Additionally, within the forum, a seminar was held on "How to publish for impactful journals and be quoted by impactful NGOs".
After the engaging sessions, the forum concluded with a closing ceremony, during which Ulkar Sattarova, Director of the State Agency for Science and Higher Education, Acting Rector of ASOIU Vazeh Asgarov, and Rector of SSU Rufat Azizov expressed their gratitude to the participants and praised the forum highly.
