The Acting Rector of Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University (ASOIU), Associate Professor Vazeh Asgarov, participated in an event held at Secondary School No. 288, named after prominent oilman Gurban Abbasov, in the Garadagh district of Baku. The event was dedicated to the 98th anniversary of Gurban Abbasov’s birth.
After the wreath-laying ceremony, a minute of silence was observed in memory of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for Azerbaijan's territorial integrity, followed by the playing of the National Anthem of Azerbaijan.
Following a welcoming speech by the school’s principal, Aygun Huseynova, speakers included Gafar Aliyev, Head of the New Azerbaijan Party’s Garadagh District Organization, and Academician Vagif Abbasov, Director of the Institute of Petrochemical Processes. They highlighted Gurban Abbasov's contributions to the oil industry. After a documentary on ASOIU, Acting Rector Vazeh Asgarov expressed pride in the fact that Gurban Abbasov was an alumnus of the university he now leads. He emphasized ASOIU’s mission of preparing highly qualified specialists for the nation’s industry and economy. Vazeh Asgarov remarked that the liberation of Azerbaijani lands in 2020 marked a new phase in the country's development, characterizing the re-establishment of sovereignty over the entire territory as a significant historical achievement. He noted that Azerbaijan awaits further positive milestones thanks to the decisive actions and diplomatic efforts of President Ilham Aliyev. He concluded by inviting the faculty and students of School No. 288 to visit ASOIU.
Following remarks by Member of Parliament Sabina Khasayeva, Rovshan Agayev, a representative of the Ministry of Science and Education, expressed gratitude to the veterans present and discussed Gurban Abbasov's contributions to Azerbaijan’s oil industry, as well as ASOIU’s role in training oil industry professionals. He encouraged the students to consider ASOIU for their future studies, referring to messages highlighted in the documentary shown during the event.
ASOIU Professor Eldar Suleymanov shared memories of Gurban Abbasov, emphasizing his key role in establishing the infrastructure for offshore oil extraction.
Additional speeches were delivered by Farhad Safarov, Head of the Narimanov Oil and Gas Production Department, and Nizami Orujov, a close relative of G.Abbasov and a presidential scholarship recipient. Both speakers reflected on Gurban Abbasov’s contributions to the national oil industry.
The event concluded with a tree-planting activity.
